Rec sites: free or cheap, first come, cash

BC Parks is not the only public campground system in the province. Recreation Sites and Trails BC, part of the Ministry of Forests, runs 1,505 recreation sites on Crown land. None of them are on the BC Parks booking site, most cannot be booked anywhere, and many are free.

What a rec site is

A recreation site is a campsite on Crown land, cleared and kept by the province, not a park. Expect an outhouse, a fire ring and usually a table, and little else: no water, no power, no showers. Some are on a paved road just outside town; more are at the end of a gravel forest service road shared with logging trucks. A local operator looks after the busier ones and collects the fee in cash.

They matter because they are a second system with its own supply. When every BC Parks campground within two hours of Vancouver is booked for a July weekend, the rec sites in the Chilliwack River valley and around Harrison Lake are not in that calendar at all.

The rules and the fees

First come, first served, and nobody can hold a site

The province’s rule is plain: “All sites are first come, first serve” and “no unoccupied trailers, tents, chairs, vehicles may save a site”. A friend’s tent on an empty pad does not count. A few operators book part of their sites on their own websites (the table says which); the rest is whoever arrives.

14 nights at most, pack out your garbage

A stay is limited to 14 consecutive days. “potable water and electricity are not available”, so bring water and take everything home. Fire bans apply to rec sites as they do everywhere else on Crown land.

Free, or $15 to $25 a night in cash

Fees are set by the operator, cash only; seniors and persons with disabilities pay half; an extra vehicle pays half. Of the 1,505 sites, 277 charge a fee and 48 are flagged as bookable. There is no card reader at a fire ring: bring the exact amount.

When to arrive

The Cat Lake page says to come early on Fridays for a long weekend. BC Hydro, in its guide to rec sites, says arriving mid-week greatly improves your chances in summer.

Nearest area first. We do not estimate drive times to rec sites: most sit at the end of a forest service road, and the road column says how far. 6 of these 22 were closed on the day we read the pages; check the site page the morning you leave.

How we keep this true

Every row is read from the site’s own page on sitesandtrailsbc.ca: the site count, the overnight fee, the operator’s booking site, the status and its comment (a page can say “open” in one field and “closed for a bear” in the next; we show the closed). The road note comes from the page’s driving directions. The date next to each table is the day we last read them, and the rows are replaced, never edited, on the next read. Sites we could not confirm on an official page are not here.
